MORE DISASTER LURKING

The people of Bowen in northern Queensland were hit by Cyclone Anthony last night. There were high winds and rain but minimal damage, boats sank, roofs lifted and trees uprooted. But now another monster cyclone is on its way.
These were our news headlines tonight:
Premier Anna Bligh says the cyclone bearing down on the Queensland coast has the potential to be the biggest the state has ever seen.
Ms Bligh is calling on Queenslanders to prepare for gale-force winds, torrential rain and massive storm surges when Cyclone Yasi crosses the coast on Wednesday night.

  1. Thanks for this update, Diane. I think what you're experiencing in Australia is being felt in many other places, too. We've had severe flooding throughout SA (excluding the Western Cape where I live) - over 100 people have lost their lives, and the damage to infrastructure, farming etc. has caused 100s of 1000s of rands worth of damage. Our government, together with the Red Cross, is appealing to the citizens of SA to contribute towards a trust fund that has been urgently set up to assist those who have been affected the worst. So, this is a widespread phenomenon.

Take care & baton down the hatches till the storm passes!

  2. Whatever is enough over there! Pretty scary. On the news just now, they said Chicago could get 2 feet of snow. We are in trouble with all of these environmental changes....

  3. Hi Diane
Glad you will be ok. We have some crazy weather lately! I am in Malaysia now. We are close to the equator and it's been 24/26 deg...the norm is mid 30s.

  4. My goodness...what a werid year this has been for everybody! And Arizona is just still boring too warm. Just maybe we will get some rain today but for the most part the California storms are going east to the north of us. I think of Pat in New York City and all of her snow that keeps falling. Blogging sure brings everybody together, doesn't it.

  5. Incredible what's been happening throughout the world. Have just read Desiree's comment about the flooding in South Africa.

Storms and snowfalls more than doubling their usual amounts, elsewhere in the world.

All the dreadful flooding in Queensland. Then there's that immense expanse of water continuing to creep through Victoria - there's some places where it's estimated it will stay for months.

Now, the threat of that huge cyclone bearing down on parts of Queensland which have had quite enough devastation to bear.

Everyone is in our thoughts and prayers.

  12. Great reporting of the situation, Diane - congratulations. Just on early Sunrise news, the Whitsunday Resort Islands have been ALL evacuated. That will be a devastating blow to the tourism industry. Doesn't look as if "Yasi" is going to blow itself out, already winds are lashing the coastline. It is already raining here on the northside of the Brisbane River!!!!

  14. Oh my goodness. We here in the states call them hurricanes. Don't have them here in California, or at least I've never heard of one hitting here before even though I've heard of them running along the cost of Baha California.

  20. Cyclones can certainly cause a battering ... I remember them from when I was a kid. Here's hoping it stays mostly out of built up areas.

  21. Hopefully the cyclone will stall and weaken but from the last reports I read that probably won't happen. Stay safe, my thoughts are with those in the path of the storm.

  22. Diane, It's a worry. More water up there. Drought then floods. That's our country.

  23. Hi Diane, Queensland has been hit very hard and the people have a lot of re-building to do, and not just buildings and homes. I heard there's a cyclone on the way to Cairns.

It's devastating that so much has been affected. Our hearts go out to everyone up there. I've been to Queensland twice and loved it, I always said if ever I decided to leave Victoria, I'd go to Queensland.
Hugs and good wishes to you and everyone up there.☺

  24. Best of luck to you as you weather this storm. It has to end sometime soon. It's minus 30 C here today with a wind chill warning of minus 44 but at least the furnace is still working and the sun is shining on our fields of white. Take care!

  25. Diane, I really feel for you all with this latest Cyclone heading to Queensland. Glad to hear you aren't going to be directly hit but will still be sending prayers to everyone out there.
