HAPPY NEW YEAR

We are lucky to be one of the first countries to see in the new year and I can report all is well in 2013. We had a  quiet and relaxing New Year's Eve with friends. We had supper and some nice wine. Then we watched part of the Edinburgh Tattoo, a DVD and then the Sydney fireworks show. Hugs and kisses all round and then home to bed.
This morning we got Happy New Year wishes from both our daughters. One playing in the snow in Palm Springs, California. The other from the top of Mt Kosciuszko in NSW. (our highest mountain) while we relax at home recovering from the festivities.
Carol-Ann on top of Mt Kosciuszko, NSW.
"Darby and Joan" having lunch on the deck.
POST SCRIPT: A little interest was shown about the saying "Darby and Joan". Firstly I had it spelt incorrectly, thanks Valerie and Colin. Colin found the meaning on Wiki. There were two:
"a happily married couple who lead a placid, uneventful life."
"a married couple celebrated for their mutual attachment"
I don't think the first one is really us even though it does describe our New Year's day.
I like the second one.

  2. We old folks are trying to stay AWAKE long enough to share an Eggnog and welcome in the new year.. We have about 1 hour and 35 minutes left. YAWN.... ha ha

Glad you all heard from your kids --and had a good lunch. We'll have our "Hoppin' John" tomorrow for good luck... We had football games today--and will have more tomorrow --and on and on and on...

    Happy 2013 to you both.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  6. If we should 'begin as we intend to proceed' then your year is off to an excellent start :)

  7. Roe: There are a group of islands 650 miles east of New Zealand which see the new year first. Chatham Islands. I heard the mayor interviewed on the radio.

  8. Well it looks nutritious, that is the meal in front of you - DIET?
Water, or does it change to wine, as in the bible?
    Have a great year.

  14. Derby and Joan. Never hear that now and although I know what it means, I don't know of its origins. Probably a radio play.

  16. Happy New Year Diane. I hope it is a wonderful one for you with lots of adventures.

We too did a quiet NYE, watched the Tattoo and then Proms that got us to midnight then off to bed to various fireworks explosions going on outside and SMS messages from Sydneysiders coming through on the phone.

  19. I had a very quiet New Year's eve. My hubby is away at his cabin (duck hunting) and my girl friend didn't feel well, so I stayed in, ate left overs and watched a movie. It was quite pleasant!

Fun to see your family, and you!

    Happy New Year!

  21. Hi Diane. You asked if my dog Hiker takes me to the same place every time I let her "take me for a walk". We have only tried it in the park down the street, so yes, she pretty much takes me off on the same trails. Dogs do love routine. Happy New Year to you.

  28. Happy New Year, Diane! I saw some film clips of the fireworks over the Sydney Harbor last night ..beautiful!

We have just a few days to go before our big move and I'll be without internet at my house here and there for awhile, till things get set up. I'll be thinking about you!

  29. "Derby and Joan"
    Well it has a history.
    1. It is Darby and Joan. I don't think Bill could now be classified as a 3 year old colt lining up in a Derby field. Sorry Bill, but age does catch up!
    2. After much hair scrathing, as I had heard the expression way back, now a "RARITY" - here is the history. Way back to 1735! It is a British saying.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darby_and_Joan

Now who knows the old Australian expression, that you hear no more,
something to do with "geese and bridles"???? ( Bridles for horses, what the hell do bridles have to do with geese??) My grandparents used it often, I think it meant - "Don't be stupid"???
Maybe these days, this "bridles and geese" should come back???
Over to Aussie viewers for their views.
    Cheers
    Colin

Idid not stay up this year(or should I say last year) went to bed early for a change so I could watch the sunrise it was worth it.

  32. Colin, I thought it was Darby and Joan too. It might be American. Wigwam for a goose's bridle, is what you mean I think. 'What is that Mum?' 'It is a wigwam......'
